Everything you need to know about VoIP phone systems and Wi-Fi!

We go over some common issues with business class VoIP phone systems and wifi.

Everything these days is connected to the internet. Your thermostat, fridges, video game consoles, you name it, it’s all connected over wifi. Naturally, since everything these days is “connected”, many of our customers want to know if it’s possible to use their VoIP phone system over wifi.

This is somewhat of a complicated answer, not because the answer itself is complex, but because the question many mean different things to different people. Regardless, let’s dive into the subject and look at how business class VoIP phone systems work with wifi.

Is there a wifi IP phone?

This is a common question we either get, or it’s what people really mean when they ask if they can use their VoIP system over wifi.

The answer is no, currently there is no such thing as a wifi IP phone. Simply put, every VoIP device needs to be physically connected to something that has a connection to the internet in order to work.

IP phones always need a wired internet connection?

Yes, they always need a wired connection. However, your phone could be connected to a wifi access point, but it has to be physically wired to the device. It could be connected to a wifi extender, network bridge, or even connected to a computer that’s connected over wifi.

While these options are all possible, this is at most best effort and not a best practice. In instances where your IP phone is connected to a wireless device, regardless of what it is, you may have quality issues such as losing audio, jitter, or latency.

Your best bet is always a hard-wired connection, from the back of your phone plugged directly into your main router. If that’s not possible, you want to make sure your wireless device, regardless of what it is, is going to have a consistent, high quality connection to a router. The differences in wireless cards doesn’t make a huge difference since VoIP doesn’t tax your internet needs that much.

Are there wireless IP phones?

Here’s where people tend to mince their words and get confused a bit. Yes, there are wireless IP phones. But, they’re more like currently wireless phones you may have in your house, as opposed to something truly wireless like a smartphone.

Wireless IP phones are still connected physically to something in order to get an internet signal, and only the handset itself is wireless. Again, picture your wireless phone home at your house. It’s going to be connected to the wall via a phone wire. IP phones act the same way, as they’re connected to the phone via an ethernet wire.

A great example of this is the Yealink W52P wireless IP phone pictured above. The only downside of this particular phone is it lacks features and programmability, but for someone that just wants a simple, cordless IP phone, this ought to do the trick.

Thoughts on wifi and VoIP phone systems.

Just because there are no truly wireless IP phones today doesn’t mean there won’t be some tech to come out in the future. Since we’re putting a wireless card into everything nowadays, I’m sure someone will eventually put a wifi card into the base of a desktop phone for a truly wireless IP phone. It won’t be any different than a laptop, smartphone, or tablet computer wirelessly connecting to the internet. Of course, it’ll still require a wired connection to a power outlet in the wall!
