Part of the benefit of using a VoIP phone system is flexibility. From being able to easily manage your system in the office, to great disaster avoidance technology, there’s a plethora of options when it comes to a business class VoIP phone system.

One of the things many of our customers ask us about is the availability of using their VoIP phone system at home. This is something we hear a lot from companies with employees who are either working remotely, spending most of their time on the road or working in the field, or from companies who have a large millennial workforce.

So, let’s touch on the subject and describe the options you have when it comes to using your VoIP phone system at home.

The answer is simply yes! Yes, you can use your business class VoIP phone system at home. In fact, you have several options for doing so.

Use your Desktop Phone at Home

Depending on your VoIP phone system, you may be able to unplug your desktop phone, bring it home, plug it in, and start using it just like you were in the office. This is a great option for anyone who’s going to be spending a lot of time working at home, or remotely, who still needs the full functionality of using a desktop IP phone.

Call Forwarding Options

A somewhat quick and dirty way of using your VoIP phone system at home is to setup a basic call forwarding option so you could have your extension ring on a cell phone or landline.

The downside of this option is the lack of options available to you since you’re only using your existing devices to receive calls on. Depending on your system, you may lose some functionality, or may need to manually use your dialpad to get your extension to do basic things such as holding a call, transferring, or parking. This requires some know by the end user to keep track of the necessary buttons to hit when using the phone.

Softphones & Mobile Apps

The best answer, and probably the one that would be the easiest for most people, is to simply take advantage of both softphones or mobile applications. Depending on your device, you can download software and

Use a mobile app or a softphone, again depending on the VoIP phone system your business is using, can provide most, if not all the same features as your desktop phone. This is a great way to easily stay connected with work without having to lug around your desktop phone or rely on call forwarding.

The added perk of both mobile apps and softphones is that they may, again depending on your VoIP system, allow you to change your settings on the fly. You could change things like your voicemail greet, the order in which your devices ring, and so on. Both mobile apps and softphones are a great, user friendly, easy way to turn where you happen to be working for the day into your office.
